Section III: Skill Learning
Acquiring Skills
By meeting certain minimal requirements, then there's a chance upon a normal attack (or even certain attack skills), that you will learn a new skill and perform that instead. Of course, if you meet a separate set of minimal requirements, you'll learn the skill automatically. Alternatively, you could get items or scripted events that allow you to learn a skill. You can also pay an appropriate person in a town to teach you the skill. In any case, you gain the skill as an untrained skill.
Untrained Skills
An untrained skill will take up to 25% more TP and/or MP to perform, and untrained skills may or may not have additional penalties associated with them (dependent on the skill). This does not apply to regular fight commands, Specials (adrenaline-based attacks), or Desperation Attacks.
Skill Training
Skills need to be trained before they can be utilized normally as a Trained Skill. Training the technique to proficiency, however, would require you to use it in battle. Learning rates could vary, but as you use it more and more, it'll require less TP and do more damage as you fine-tune your skills. Passive skills are acquired along the same lines, though some might not need to be "mastered" (like "Guts"). Skill learning rates are largely based off of Intelligence and the nature of the skill. Also, stats related to the skill will be taken into account as well (such as agility for a Headshot ability). Penalties are scaled back slightly as your training rate increases.
Trained Skills
A trained skill is one that you can pull off successfully at a moments notice (relatively speaking). Trained skills can be used in certain multitechs. Additionally, this unlocks tshe learning of additional skills.
Skill Mastery
Trained Skills can be practiced further to become Mastered Skills, which may have additional effects or utilization. Some abilities can be mastered quickly, especially if they are uncomplicated, elementary abilities. Others, such as a Battoujutsu, have an incredibly long Mastery learning rates, but the rewards are great. Generally, though, mastering a skill takes longer than training it to full proficiency. A skill derived from another skill cannot be mastered until the originating skill is mastered.
Mastered Skills
Mastered Skills enjoy a reduction in TP and/or MP usage. They may also enjoy special attributes or additional damage. A mastered originating skill would make a derivative skill that much more powerful at no added cost.
